I am appalled at the increasingly degener-ate state of our society. The moral standards of our country seem to be rapidly declining. In the name of freedom, the U.S. Supreme Court recently voted 6 to 3 to reverse the laws against sodomy. “Time” magazine, July 7, 2003, p.37 states, “…the Supreme Court has essentially said it’s O.K. for us to sodomize each other.” One Supreme Court Judge, Justice Antonin Scalia, opposed the new ruling and “warned of undermining laws against bestiality, bigamy, prostitution, and incest” in the future. Proponents say they are now at liberty, and their “yoke” has been lifted. Yet this liberty is actually a yoke of slavery to them for they are controlled by their ungodly sexual desires. “While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage” (II Peter 2:19).
Because of the great wickedness and sexual immorality of Sodom and Gomorrah thousands of years ago, God had to destroy the entire city and its inhabitants with fire from heaven. “Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire” (Jude 7). These verses are a sad record of a city that went so far away from God’s moral standards that the entire population of the city had to be destroyed.
Yet now, I see history repeating itself again. Even the word “sodomy” and “sodomy law” are from the same root word of Sodom and Gomorrah. The deterioration of our country’s moral standards is another sign that the end of this world is coming soon. By this realization, we all should be more vigilant in seeking to understand God’s design for our standard of living and determine to stand firm to the principles set forth in the Bible.
God said, “And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city” (Rev. 22:12,14). God’s principles of living will give our lives and homes true happiness and fit us for our homes in heaven.
