Words

Have you ever heard the phrase, “Sticks and stones can break my bones but words can break my heart”? In Proverbs 18:21 it says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” The words that we speak have a powerful influence for good or for evil. Hasty words and abusive language often break the harmony of a family. Proverbs 29:20 says, “Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? There is more hope of a fool than of him.” On the other hand, peaceful words, spoken in the spirit of love, can binds broken hearts back together again, and build healthy relationships.
Here are some Biblical principles to bring kind and loving words into your home and life.
1. A Soft Answer – If someone confronts you with harsh words, do not retaliate in the same manner. Reply with a calm, soft answer. “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger” (Proverbs 15:1).
2. Speak With Love – Read the love chapter, I Corinthians 13. Love suffers long, is kind, envys not, is not proud, is not easily provoked, thinks no evil, and endures all things.
3. Do Not Overwork – Stress and overwork causes a loss of self-control, impatience, and fretfulness. It is hard to control your words when in a stressful temperament.
4. Silence or Song – Often silence is the best rebuke for someone who is angry with you. Singing a happy tune will help lighten the atmosphere around you.
5. Prayer – Pray constantly that God will help you to speak kind words. “And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive” (Matthew 21:22).
Speaking words of kindness and affection will cause children to forget their troubles, bring back peace within the home, and will be a power to comfort, soothe, and bless.
