The Narrow Path

“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it” (Matthew 7:13, 14).
During the time when Christ was on earth, the citizens of Palestine lived in cities surrounded by walls, often located on the top of hills or mountains. At the close of the day, the city gates were locked shut. Travelers had to hastily climb steep, rugged cliffs and roads to enter the city before nightfall. They dared not loiter around or be distracted by other attractions if they were to reach their final destination.
In the illustration of the broad and narrow way, Christ sought to lead the people to strive towards the path that leads to eternal life. I often wonder why the majority follows the broad path that leads to destruction. Some may not know which is the right path, and some are merely indifferent. Some believe that the choice of the majority must be right. There is no need to search for the broad road because it is easy and the majority of people follow it. Without any effort, the feet will naturally turn to the path of ease and pleasure. It takes no self-denial, self-sacrifice, patience, decision, or hardship to go with the wide and popular road. It is always easier to go downhill than uphill. However, the wide, easy path is quickly strewn with thorns and despairing darkness to the unsuspecting wanderer.
So how do we know which path is the right way to go? Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life,” “He that believeth on me hath everlasting life” (John 14:6; 6:47). If you want to follow the right way, follow the way of God. Believe in God and follow His guidance found in His word, the Bible. We must put our will and desires with His will. Although the path to righteousness and eternal life is narrow and traveled by few, God promises to give the strength and direction to walk in it. The final destination of eternal life far outweighs any difficulties in the journey.
