Many of us have experienced the sense of loneliness in our daily lives. We have found that being among a
crowd of people is not the answer to our needs. If the sense of loneliness is not addressed, it can often lead to discouragement or depression. An estimated 30 million Americans suffer from depressive disorders in every age, race, religion or education. There were times in my own life when I struggled with loneliness and depression. Being a Pastor’s wife and mother of three, my husband was often away. Sometimes I felt that there was no one to turn to for help or emotional support. I would smile to cover the pain I was feeling inside. I had the temptation to withdraw and feel sorry for myself, but it just made the situation worse. I began to realize that I had to take charge of my own well-being, and find ways to overcome the loneliness. Here are a few things I have found to combat loneliness and lead a more satisfying life that I would like to share with you:
1. Reach Out To Friends. Do not wait for someone to reach out to you. Call or write to friends. “A man that hath friends must show himself friendly…” (Proverbs 18:24). We cannot have friends unless we make friends. Having someone to talk to is a wounderful cure for loneliness.
2. Stay Active. Get out of the house and do something. Outdoor exercise is a great stimulus. Your body will feel refreshed and the air will clear your thoughts. Useful activity helps us forget about our loneliness.
3. Help Others. When you help others, you will find that there are many people that are lonely too. Caring for others makes you realize how blessed you really are and you will appreciate all that you have.
4. Get Adequate Rest. Lacking sleep and rest makes us tired, irritable and intensifies depression.
5. Do Not Depend Solely on Others. You cannot totally depend on others for your own happiness. I used to believe that my husband had to be around all the time so that I would not be lonely. But, I had to realize that I could also be happy on my own or with my children. Do not let circumstances dictate whether you are lonely or not.
6. Connect With God. This key is the most important. Whatever your situation, wherever you go, in the darkest corner, when you feel helpless and alone, God is there. Talking to God in prayer will lift your mind from gloomy thoughts into the brightness of His presence. “The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms” (Deut. 33:27). God says, “I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest” (Genesis 28:15). God is always ready to help, comfort and be your closest friend.
